Microbes help regulate water quality by converting biologically usable nitrogen compounds into nitrogen gas, yet scientists have struggled to measure how much gas they produce. Water already contains abundant nitrogen gas absorbed from the atmosphere, which can conceal the microbial contribution. Researchers led by UCLA found a natural fingerprint in the way nitrogen isotopes pair inside molecules. Atmospheric nitrogen contains pairs of two heavy nitrogen-15 atoms more often than chance would predict, whereas microbes assemble nitrogen atoms almost randomly. When microbial gas mixes with atmospheric gas, the excess of heavy pairs declines. Using a high-resolution mass spectrometer, the team detected this subtle signal in groundwater, lakes, coastal basins and deep-sea sediments. The method could reveal whether microbes remove nitrate pollution before it reaches rivers or coasts, improve assessments of fertilizer and wastewater impacts, and help scientists calculate regional and global nitrogen budgets more accurately.

YDS mini sorusu
What makes the rare heavy-nitrogen pairing useful for measuring microbial nitrogen removal?
- It distinguishes microbially produced gas from the large atmospheric background by revealing different patterns of isotope pairing
- It identifies where fertilizer entered water by comparing nitrate abundance across routine monitoring programs and coastal dead zones
- It measures heavy nitrogen pairs to determine how much nitrogen plants absorb before microbes convert compounds into gas
- It uses atmospheric isotope patterns to estimate oxygen loss when algal blooms decay in lakes and coastal basins
- It tracks common nitrogen-14 molecules to map nitrogen movement through water without data on transport or accumulation
Cevabı ve açıklamasını göster
Doğru cevap: A
Atmosfer kaynaklı azot gazında iki ağır azot-15 atomunun eşleşmesi beklenenden daha sıktır; mikropların ürettiği gazda ise atomlar neredeyse rastgele eşleşir. Bu fark, büyük atmosferik arka plan içinde mikrobiyal katkının ayırt edilmesini sağlar. Doğru cevap A’dır.
