Metin
Researchers supported by the US National Institutes of Health have created human lung organoids that retain a functioning local immune system. They placed intact distal lung fragments from more than 220 volunteers in a three-dimensional air-liquid culture that mimics gas exchange and can remain viable for months. Important immune-cell populations survived, including tissue-resident T cells that preserved their ability to recognise viruses. When the organoids were infected with SARS-CoV-2, they produced both general inflammation and an adaptive response directed specifically at the virus. The team then exposed some organoids to viral fragments before infection, imitating a booster. Their immune cells responded more effectively later, reducing the severity of subsequent infections. Because the model allows scientists to study lung-tissue immunity separately from the rest of the body, it may clarify how local protection works and provide a platform for testing mucosal vaccines. It could also support research into asthma, bacterial infections and other pulmonary diseases.
Beş ifade
- tissue-resident T cell: dokuda yerleşik T hücresi
- air-liquid interface: hava-sıvı arayüzü
- adaptive response: uyarlanabilir bağışıklık yanıtı
- viral fragment: viral parça
- mucosal vaccine: mukozal aşı
YDS mini sorusu
Why are the new lung organoids particularly valuable for respiratory-disease research?
- They preserve lung tissue after removing immune cells, allowing inflammation to be measured apart from adaptive responses
- They sustain resident immune cells in human lung tissue, allowing local antiviral responses and targeted interventions to be studied
- They recreate gas exchange with circulating blood cells, allowing systemic vaccine responses to be compared across pulmonary diseases
- They shorten tissue culture to several days, allowing transient reactions to be examined before resident cells lose function
- They combine animal and human lung fragments, allowing differences in tissue immunity between species to be tested directly

Doğru cevap: B
Organoidlar, insan akciğer dokusundaki yerleşik T hücreleri dâhil önemli bağışıklık hücrelerini aylarca işlevsel tutabiliyor. Bu sayede bilim insanları yerel antiviral yanıtları vücudun geri kalanından ayrı inceleyip mukozal aşı gibi hedefli yaklaşımları sınayabilir. Doğru cevap B’dir.
