Landsat, Rupert Körfezi’ndeki kahverengi tonlarının kaynağını gösteriyor

Landsat Reveals Why Rupert Bay Has Several Shades of Brown

Metin

A Landsat 9 image taken on 27 September 2026 shows tea-coloured rivers spreading across the mudflats of Hannah and Rupert bays in Canada before meeting the darker water of James Bay. Much of the rivers’ colour comes from coloured dissolved organic matter, or CDOM, which leaches from decaying leaves, roots, bark and soil as waterways cross boreal forests and wetlands. Because CDOM absorbs blue and ultraviolet light, it makes the water look brown. The lighter plumes near the shore have a different source: tides and river currents stir fine mud and other sediment from the shallow flats. Those flats continue to develop as rivers deposit material and postglacial rebound gradually raises the landscape. Moisture and vegetation also explain the green patterns on land, where forested stream channels appear darker than poorly drained peat bogs. The image therefore records several interacting biological, geological and hydrological processes rather than a single cause of discolouration.

Beş ifade

  • dissolved organic matter: çözünmüş organik madde
  • leach from: içinden çözünerek suya karışmak
  • suspended sediment: askıdaki tortu
  • postglacial rebound: buzul sonrası yükselme
  • poorly drained: suyu iyi tahliye olmayan

YDS mini sorusu

According to the passage, what role does coloured dissolved organic matter play in Rupert Bay’s waterways?

  1. It is stirred from shallow mudflats by tides and currents, producing sediment plumes near the shoreline
  2. It leaches from decaying organic material and absorbs wavelengths that make the river water look brown
  3. It is deposited by rivers to build mudflats as postglacial rebound gradually raises the surrounding landscape
  4. It gathers in poorly drained peat bogs, where it supports dense forest growth beside stream channels
  5. It records the cultural history of beavers and the fur trade in Cree communities around the bays

Organic matter leached from decaying vegetation absorbs blue and ultraviolet light, giving the rivers their characteristic brown appearance.
