Treehopper Duets Reveal a Hidden Channel of Communication

C1 · 4 dakikalık okuma · Kaynak: Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, 30 Eylül 2026

Metin

Treehoppers communicate through plant stems rather than through sounds audible to humans. By gripping a stem and rapidly moving their abdomens, the insects create vibrations that others detect through their legs. Smithsonian researcher Judith Smit is studying courtship in Guayaquila gracilicornis, a common Panamanian species. A male sends a distinctive signal and a receptive female replies, producing a duet that helps the partners locate one another and continually adjust their behaviour. This interaction challenges accounts of courtship that treat females as passive receivers of male displays. In laboratory enclosures, Smit and her students record small movements with accelerometers and a laser Doppler vibrometer. They also play altered signals back through plants to test whether changes in pitch or duration affect the insects’ responses. Because vibrational communication is widespread among insects but remains understudied, the work may reveal how flexible behaviour influences mate choice and how small animals adapt their signals to human-driven changes such as noise, artificial light and warming.

Beş ifade

  • plant stem: bitki gövdesi
  • receptive female: çiftleşmeye hazır dişi
  • passive receiver: pasif alıcı
  • playback experiment: kayıtları yeniden oynatma deneyi
  • mate choice: eş seçimi

YDS mini sorusu

How do the treehopper duets challenge a common view of animal courtship?

  1. They show that females actively reply to males and can influence how the interaction develops.
  2. They show that females choose mates by observing the abdominal movements accompanying male signals.
  3. They suggest that duets maintain contact between partners once they have found one another.
  4. They indicate that males use their legs to produce the vibrations females detect with their abdomens.
  5. They establish that warming explains changes in signal pitch and duration recorded during laboratory trials.

Doğru cevap: A

Dişi böcek erkeğin sinyalini yalnızca almakla kalmaz; kendi titreşim sinyaliyle karşılık verir ve düetin gidişatını etkiler. Bu, dişileri pasif gören yaygın yaklaşımı sorgular. Doğru cevap A’dır.

The alternating signals reveal courtship as a two-way negotiation in which the female’s response helps guide the male and shapes subsequent behaviour.
