Longer Lives Bring a Changing Global Health Burden

Metin

WHO’s 2026 Global Health Estimates show both recovery and a major shift in disease patterns. Global life expectancy rose to 73.3 years in 2023, almost matching 2019, yet healthy life expectancy remained 0.4 years below its pre-pandemic level. At the same time, noncommunicable diseases accounted for 74 percent of deaths, up from 58 percent in 2000, and eight of the ten leading causes of death were noncommunicable. Dementia moved from nineteenth place in 2000 to fifth among global causes of death in 2023, while dementia deaths tripled. Mental health burdens also increased: from 2019 to 2023, age-standardised disability and premature-death rates rose by about 20 percent for depression and nearly 45 percent for anxiety. WHO argues that the figures should guide health priorities, because living longer does not automatically mean living more years in good health and countries now need systems that can respond to changing causes of illness.

YDS mini sorusu

Which conclusion is best supported by the WHO estimates?

  1. Longer average lifespans coexist with slower recovery in healthy life expectancy and a growing burden of noncommunicable disease.
  2. The recovery in global life expectancy indicates that depression and anxiety have returned close to their pre-pandemic burden.
  3. The mental health estimates indicate that depression accounted for the larger proportional rise in burden between 2019 and 2023.
  4. The 74 percent figure measures the proportion of people now living with noncommunicable diseases rather than their share of deaths.
  5. The ranking of dementia among leading causes of death indicates that it now accounts for most noncommunicable disease deaths.
Cevabı ve açıklamasını göster

Doğru cevap: A

Toplam yaşam beklentisi pandemi öncesi düzeye yaklaşırken sağlıklı yaşam beklentisi daha yavaş toparlandı; aynı zamanda bulaşıcı olmayan hastalıkların ölüm içindeki payı belirgin biçimde arttı. Bu nedenle doğru cevap A’dır.

The estimates pair a near-return of overall life expectancy with a remaining healthy-life gap and a much larger share of deaths from noncommunicable conditions.
