Ancient Ocean Chemistry Helped Oxygen Persist

Metin

Earth’s atmosphere first gained lasting oxygen about 2.3 billion years ago, but scientists have struggled to explain how oxygen remained available long enough to support increasingly complex life. A study involving UC Riverside proposes a feedback cycle driven by ancient ocean chemistry. As oxygen entered seawater, sulfate levels rose. Microbes then used sulfate to break down organic matter more efficiently, releasing phosphorus that had been bound in the system. This recycled nutrient stimulated fresh biological growth. When more organic carbon from that growth was buried rather than decomposed, additional oxygen accumulated in the atmosphere. Researchers tested the idea by analysing South African rocks with a method that separates phosphorus according to the minerals carrying it, revealing how much was biologically available instead of merely measuring the total. The findings also indicate substantial oxygen fluctuations after the Great Oxidation Event and suggest that nutrients, oxygen and life evolved through closely connected processes.

Beş ifade

  • feedback cycle: geri besleme döngüsü
  • biologically available: biyolojik olarak kullanılabilir
  • organic carbon burial: organik karbonun tortullara gömülmesi
  • nutrient recycling: besin maddesinin yeniden döngüye girmesi
  • Great Oxidation Event: Büyük Oksidasyon Olayı

YDS mini sorusu

According to the proposed feedback cycle, how did sulfate indirectly help atmospheric oxygen persist?

  1. It promoted phosphorus burial in organic matter, making this nutrient available for renewed growth in seawater.
  2. It encouraged microbes to release oxygen while consuming phosphorus, supplying the atmosphere during renewed biological growth.
  3. It rose after phosphorus had fuelled fresh biological growth, with microbial decay then supplying atmospheric oxygen.
  4. It helped microbes recycle phosphorus, supporting growth and carbon burial that allowed more oxygen to accumulate.
  5. It promoted decomposition of newly produced organic matter, with carbon recycling sustaining the rise in atmospheric oxygen.

Doğru cevap: D

Artan sülfat, mikropların organik maddeyi parçalarken fosforu deniz suyuna geri kazandırmasını kolaylaştırdı. Fosfor yeni biyolojik üretimi, organik karbonun gömülmesi de atmosferde daha fazla oksijen birikmesini destekledi. Bu zinciri doğru veren seçenek D’dir.

Sulfate-assisted decomposition returned phosphorus to seawater, and the resulting growth increased carbon burial so that more oxygen could remain in the atmosphere.
