ESA’s Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer, Juice, is using a close Earth flyby to reshape its long route towards Jupiter without consuming enormous amounts of fuel. On 28 September, the spacecraft will pass within 8,640 kilometres of Earth, changing direction by about 20 degrees and gaining roughly 3.5 kilometres per second. This gravity assist prepares Juice for another Earth encounter in 2029 and arrival at Jupiter in 2031.
