The World Health Organization is widening its prequalification programme so that more essential medical devices can be independently assessed for quality, safety and performance. The programme already covered diagnostic tests and male circumcision devices; it will now include male and female condoms, intrauterine devices and artificial-intelligence software that examines digital chest X-rays for possible tuberculosis. Products meeting the standards enter a trusted WHO list used by UN agencies, donors, purchasing bodies and national authorities. This support is especially important where domestic regulation is limited: WHO reports that about 70 percent of countries have inadequate or weak systems for medicines and vaccines, with still greater difficulties for other health products. The change also transfers assessment of condoms and IUDs from UNFPA to WHO and brings circumcision devices into the broader framework. By evaluating computer-aided TB screening as well, the programme extends quality assurance to a digital technology intended to identify people who need further testing.
